HOW TO BUILD A BREEDING CAGE - PART ONE

BUILDING A FRAME ON A CANARY CAGE FRONT

STEP-BY-STEP PHOTOGRAPHIC INSTRUCTIONS

Article and all photographs by Don Perez

WHAT IS "PUNCH BAR?"

Punch bar is exactly that; either a flat horizontal sturdy metal bar or fiber-glass bar that has a series of equally-spaced holes punched through it.  In the metal fronts, metal rods and in the fiber-glass fronts, fiber-glass rods are then pushed through these holes and all are fused or spot-welded/soldered together during the manufacturing process of making the cage front.

The instructions shown here are used to build a wooden frame around one of these cage fronts.   These framed fronts can then be used either singly, in pairs and even three or four across to make the English-style box-type breeding cages shown elsewhere on this site.  One can remove the wire or solid partitions in the double-breeder or triple-breeder units and turn each unit into a convenient flight cage.

Just click on the thumbnails below to see enlarged photos with some guidelines to make your own framed fronts.  When finished viewing and/or printing, click the back button on your browser bar to come back to this page.

Below are two examples of what punch bar fronts look like.  The front on the left is a canary front with head holes for outside hanging seed hoppers and drinkers and have 5/8" spacing vertical bars.  The front on the right is considered a finch front in that it has 3/8" spacing on the vertical bars.  On the Part Two of this article as well as on Master Cage-builder, Mr. Ernie Cobb's Page also on this site, you may request from him a copy of a listing of what front styles and other products he has available for you.

They are presently available from Mr. Cobb in the usual standard sizes:  12"x12", 12"x16"and 12"x18".  Here is one of his high-quality cage fronts for your inspection, simply click on it to enlarge it and check out the high quality of these fronts that Mr. Cobb makes.
